If you've asked around for a quote, you've probably heard anything from "free" to tens of thousands of ringgit. This guide breaks down small business website cost in Malaysia into the parts you actually pay for, so you can compare quotes properly.
The four things you pay for
1. Domain name
Your address online, such as yourbusiness.com or yourbusiness.my. It's paid every year. The price depends on the ending you choose and the registrar. Make sure it's registered in your business's name, not the developer's. If you're unsure which ending to pick, see .com or .my? (in Malay).
2. Hosting
The server that keeps your site online. Some providers charge monthly, others yearly. A simple landing page is small, so hosting it can be very cheap, and on modern platforms sometimes free within fair-use limits.
3. Design and build
This is usually the biggest cost. It depends on:
- How many pages you need
- Template or custom design
- Features: booking forms, product catalogue, online payment, member login
- Who writes the content and supplies the photos
4. Upkeep
Prices change, opening hours change, you add a new service. Ask up front whether small edits are free, charged per change, or covered by a monthly plan.
Template vs custom: where most of the price difference comes from
| Template | Custom | |
|---|---|---|
| Turnaround | Days | Weeks |
| Price | Lower, often fixed | Quoted per scope |
| Best for | Service businesses, shops, agents | Unique workflows, many products |
For many small businesses whose customers simply call or WhatsApp, a well-built one-page site does the job. Read landing page vs full website (in Malay) for the trade-offs.
Hidden costs to watch for
- Renewals. A cheap first year can be followed by a much higher renewal for hosting or domain.
- Locked-in domains. If the developer owns your domain, moving away later is painful.
- Paid plugins or themes that need yearly licences.
- Charges for every small change.
- No SSL (https), which browsers flag as "not secure".
8 questions to ask before you pay
- Whose name is the domain registered under?
- What do domain and hosting cost from year two?
- How many rounds of revisions are included?
- Is the site mobile-friendly?
- Is Google Search Console and analytics set up?
- Will there be a WhatsApp or call button?
- Can I take my site and domain with me if I leave?
- How long until it's live?
A trustworthy provider will answer all of these in writing.
